AVIF vs JPG: Modern Compression or Maximum Compatibility?
AVIF and JPG sit at very different points in image-format history. AVIF is designed for modern, highly efficient compression. JPG remains one of the most universally accepted photo formats ever created. Choosing between them is mostly a trade between efficiency and compatibility.
Why AVIF can be so small
AVIF uses modern image coding technology that can preserve strong visual quality at relatively low file sizes. This can make it attractive for websites where transfer size and loading speed matter.
JPG uses older compression and may need more bytes to achieve a similar visual result, especially at demanding quality levels.
Why JPG is still everywhere
JPG has an enormous compatibility advantage. Photo editors, office software, web forms, social platforms, printers, cameras, and operating systems have supported it for years. AVIF support is strong in modern browsers but can still be a problem in legacy or specialized workflows.
Transparency and conversion
AVIF can support transparency. JPG cannot. When a transparent AVIF is exported to JPG, transparent pixels need to be flattened onto a solid background.
Converting AVIF to JPG is also a new lossy encode. It solves compatibility, not quality enhancement, and the JPG may end up larger than the AVIF source.
Choose based on destination
For a modern website that controls its own image pipeline, AVIF can be a strong delivery format. For a file you are sending to another person, submitting to an unknown form, or opening in older software, JPG is usually the safer choice.
